Why some files will not open
Read a file name ending and know what program it needs.
A file is just a container. The few letters after the last dot in its name say what shape the contents are in.
A file called letter.pdf is a fixed page, like something printed. A file called letter.docx is a document you can still edit. A photo might end in .jpg or .heic. A song might end in .mp3.
When a file will not open, it is usually not damaged. Your device simply has no program that reads that shape. It is like being handed a key for a lock you do not own.
The fix is almost never fighting with the file. It is either installing the right program, opening it in a web browser, or asking the sender to save it as a PDF, which nearly everything can read.
