Quiet a group without leaving it
Stop a busy group interrupting you, without leaving it and without anybody being told.
A family group can produce forty messages before lunch. The two options people know about are putting up with it and leaving, and leaving is awkward because everybody is told.
There is a third. Muting stops the group making a sound or lighting the screen. The messages still arrive and sit there waiting, and you read them when you feel like it. Nobody is told, because it is a setting on your own phone.
