Most people believe a group has two settings: shouting at you all day, or gone. There is a third, and it is the one nearly everybody wants.
It is set per conversation, so the street group can be silent while the family group still rings. That combination — one silenced, one loud, one pinned to the top — is what makes a phone pleasant to own.
