The file somebody would need if you were ill

Build one short list that tells a trusted person where everything is.

When somebody has to step in for you, they rarely need the papers themselves on day one. They need to know where the papers are.

Copying every document into one place is a large job, and it goes stale. A one page map does not go stale nearly as fast. It says: the insurance card is in the blue folder in the desk, the pharmacy is on Elm Street, my doctor is Dr. Reyes, the car title is at the bank.

Write it for a person who has never been in your house. Name the room, then the furniture, then the container. Add phone numbers, because a person on hold needs a number more than a file.

Then decide who gets it. A map nobody can find helps nobody. Print one copy for the person you trust, and keep one where you would keep a passport.

Keep medical items and money items on separate lines. The hospital wants one kind, the bank wants the other, and separating them saves a confused phone call later.
