Open a PDF and make the writing bigger
Read any PDF comfortably, however small it arrives, and find a word inside it.
Hospitals, city offices and banks all send PDFs, and they nearly always arrive in a size chosen by somebody with excellent eyesight.
So the words will not rearrange themselves to fit your screen. Instead you make the whole page bigger, which is a different control and takes one press.
These three work in PDFs, on websites, in email and in most other places you read.
If your mouse has a wheel, holding Ctrl and rolling it does the same thing, and is quicker still.
Key points
- Open a PDF that arrived in an email, and know it has not been saved anywhere yet
- Make it comfortable with Fit to width, or with Ctrl and +
- Know that zooming never changes what prints or what anybody else sees
- Find one word in a long document with Ctrl+F
What to remember
- Fit to width is usually the best single press: it makes the page exactly as wide as your window.
- Zoom is for your eyes only. Nothing you do to it can change what prints or what the sender receives.
- Find works in PDFs, on websites and in documents. It is the same two keys everywhere: Ctrl+F.
Try this
Open any PDF you have and press Ctrl and + three times. Then press Ctrl and 0 to put it back exactly as it was.
