Keeping a battery healthy for years
Change three habits that slow how fast your battery wears out.
The battery in your phone is a chemical part. Like a good pan, it lasts longer if you do not cook it.
Two things age it fastest. Heat is the first. A phone left on a dashboard in July, or charging under a pillow, loses capacity you never get back. The second is sitting at a full one hundred percent for hours, which happens every night on the nightstand.
Phones now handle the second one for you, if you let them. Optimized or adaptive charging learns your sleep schedule, brings the phone to about eighty percent, and finishes just before you wake. Turning that on is a one-time decision that pays for years.
You will also see a battery health number in settings. Around eighty percent after a few years is normal, not a failure. It is a wear gauge, like tread on a tire.
Key points
- Heat and sitting full are what age a battery.
- Optimized charging finishes the last part near wake-up time.
- Battery health is a wear gauge and only goes down.
- A hot phone should come out of the sun before anything else.
- A worn battery can be replaced without replacing the phone.
What to remember
- One setting, changed once, spares the battery thousands of hours at full.
- When a phone feels hot, deal with the heat first. Everything else is a rounding error.
- A battery at 84 percent is worn, not broken. A replacement battery is usually cheaper than a new phone.
Try this
Find the battery health screen on your own phone this afternoon, write down the capacity number and the date on a slip of paper, and check it again in six months.
