Read the paper on it, properly

Sit down with the tablet after breakfast and read the day’s paper at a size that suits your eyes, whether or not the house has a signal.

A newspaper is roughly the size and weight of a tablet, held at roughly the same angle, read in roughly the same chair. Nothing else about the machine fits your life so neatly.

And a paper on a tablet does three things a printed one cannot. The words can be made any size you like. Yesterday and last week are still in there. And it arrives before you are awake, in silence, without anybody coming up the path.

What to remember

Try this

Open your paper — app or website — on your own tablet and find the two letter A’s, one small and one large. Push the size up two notches and read a paragraph. Most people have never touched it and never go back.
