Copy and paste, properly
Move words and addresses from one place to another without retyping a thing.
Retyping an address you are looking at, letter by letter, is the single most common piece of unnecessary work people do on a computer.
Copy takes a photograph of whatever you have highlighted and puts it on an invisible shelf. Paste puts it down wherever you are. The original is never touched.
Key points
- Copy anything highlighted with Ctrl+C, and put it down with Ctrl+V
- Know that the clipboard holds one thing, and the newest copy wins
- Move an address out of an email without retyping a character of it
What to remember
- Copy never removes anything. The email still has the address in it, exactly as before.
- One thing at a time. Copy, then paste, then copy the next thing — not copy, copy, paste.
Try this
Find an address or a phone number on a website, highlight it by dragging across it, press Ctrl+C, then paste it into an email to yourself. Nothing on the website changes.
