The settings worth changing on day one
Change half a dozen things and find your device noticeably more comfortable than the one that came out of the box.
A device leaves the factory arranged to look impressive on a shelf: bright, sharp, small writing, and a screen that locks after thirty seconds so the display stays tidy. None of that was chosen with you in mind.
Six changes take about ten minutes and are worth more than any accessory you could buy.
Key points
- Text size, contrast, brightness, lock delay, ring volume, automatic updates
- Medical ID and Find My are ten-minute jobs that pay for themselves once
- Anything with reset in the name is a repair tool, not a setting
- A fingerprint or face unlock is quicker than a code and far safer than none
What to remember
- If a screen is uncomfortable, that is a setting rather than a fact of life.
- Anything about comfort: change it today. Anything with the word reset in it: leave it for a day when something is broken.
- A fingerprint or your face is faster than no lock at all, and vastly safer. There is no need to choose between comfort and sense here.
Try this
Fill in Medical ID on your own phone this evening — on an iPhone it is inside the Health app, on Android it is in Settings under Safety and emergency. It is read from the lock screen, and it is the one setting that could matter enormously.
